Write On!
This issue sends us off on a new year. We invite you to join us this year not just as readers, but as authors. If you have any interest in submitting an article, please read on, then write on!
We’re starting with this issue, filled with articles of general interest, including an important article by Judge Georgia Akers on how we as attorneys should address elder abuse. We also have interesting articles on supersedeas by Patrick Dyer and Jacalyn Scott, on inadvertent disposition of mineral interests (and what to do about it) by Charles Mansour and Ed Cogburn, and on arbitration of securities cases by Mark Watler.
The rest of this year’s issues will be devoted to special topics, and each will have a guest editor.
This year’s articles editor John Gray (jgray@gardere.com) is editing the September-October issue, featuring legislative and appellate topics. Articles for this issue are already in progress.
The November-December issue on juvenile law and education topics will be under the guidance of board member Hannah Sibiski (hsibiski@fulbright.com). Articles on these topics are due by September 18, 2009.
Bankruptcy and other consumer topics will fill the January-February 2010 issue, under guest editor Shawn Bates (sbates@ywcllp.com). Articles are due by November 20, 2009.
Don Ford (dford@ford-math.com) and Angela Dixon (adixon@aldixonlaw.com) will co-edit the solo/small firm topics issue for March-April, 2010. The articles deadline for this issue is January 15, 2010.
The final issue for this Bar year will be the traditional focus on volunteerism. New board member Carolyn Aiman (carolyn.aiman@shell.com) will be its guest editor. The articles deadline for this issue will be March 19, 2010.
Writing for The Houston Lawyer can be a very rewarding experience, as well as an excellent marketing tool. If you’re inclined, please contact me or one of the guest editors for more information.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Editor in chief Ann Zeigler congratulates Robert Painter, who served as guest editor for the September-October 2008 issue of The Houston Lawyer, which focused on veterans’ legal problems. The issue won first place in the category of public relations magazine in the Lone Star Press Awards, a statewide awards program sponsored by the Houston Press Club to recognize outstanding accomplishments in print, television and radio. Fred A. Simpson, 2008-2009 editor in chief, accepted the award at a June 26th ceremony. The judges said: “The Houston Bar Association chose a very timely subject that we don’t often think about but is crucially important. In this smart, extremely readable issue, we learn about the problems and battles facing disabled vets, vets struggling with reemployment, and some of the faces behind these pressing issues. Kudos to The Houston Lawyer for tackling a sometimes-touchy subject.”
