‘To Win Equality By Law: Brown v. Board at 50’

BBy KRISTOPHER M. STOCKBERGER

The Houston Bar Association and the Houston Young Lawyers Associa-tion celebrated Law Week 2004 with numerous activities centered around Law Day, May 1. This year’s activities focused on the theme, “To Win Equality By Law: Brown v. Board at 50.” Activities emphasized the significance of this landmark 1954 Supreme Court case, which ended the doctrine of “separate but equal” in our education system.
Lawyers visited more than 250 elementary, middle and high school classrooms to make interactive presentations on Brown. In addition, the HBA presented a reenactment of the final oral arguments to the Supreme Court, which it will make available as a videotape for schools. The HBA also participated as a sponsor in the Education Foundation of Harris County’s symposium held on May 17th, the actual anniversary of the Supreme Court decision. Complete coverage of the HBA’s activities in commemoration of Brown v. Board will be featured in the July-August issue of The Houston Lawyer.
Other Law Week activities included a program on jury service for older teens; the “Dialogue on Freedom” program, an interactive presentation on democracy for high school seniors; a Law Week Luncheon; Java with the Judges; a Law Week Naturalization Ceremony; and the annual Lawyers Against Waste Trash Bash.
The Law Week Committee was chaired by Bret A. Bosker and the Hon. David O. Fraga. Committee members were John Barr, Jr., John Black, David Brewer, Cristina Teszaca Cano, Cathy L. Clark, Scarlett E. Collings, Caroline Faubus, Chad Forbes, Hon. Kem Thompson Frost, Joel A. Goldberg, Carol Griffin, Jennine Hovell-Cox, Jeff Joyce, Felicia Harris Kyle, Marcela Ortiz-Taing, Michael Bradley Raye, Catherine Tram Than, Hon. Jennifer Walker Elrod and Meca Walker.
