is Adoption
Awareness Month
In Adoption. For thousands of children who linger in foster care as they wait for permanent homes and loving families, adoption is the answer. And as you read this, there are about 150,000 children in North America waiting to be adopted.
This special issue of The Houston Lawyer examines this difficult but rewarding topic. The guest editor for the issue is David Wilson, a partner with Hays, McConn, Rice & Pickering here in Houston. Although he doesn’t practice family law, David has the best experience in the world with the issue of adoption — he has lived it. As the oldest child in his family, David learned at an early age what others cannot be taught in a lifetime: the acceptance of other cultures and an appreciation for one’s own blessings.
In this issue, David offers an article discussing his experiences with his adopted siblings, as well as the experiences of two other Houston lawyers whose lives have been touched by adoption. The issue also contains an article presenting an overview of the adoption process. In addition, authors Charlotte Booker, Cathy Morris and Pamela Parker have written an article addressing ways of increasing the number of children adopted in Texas. Finally, the issue offers a resource guide on adoptions and the adoption process. Thank you so much, David, for putting together this important and informative issue.
One way to encourage adoption is by providing information about how to begin the process. This issue represents the Editorial Board’s efforts in this regard. We hope these efforts increase the number of children making the transition from foster care to a permanent family.
The end of the year marks a welcomed addition to The Houston Lawyer - a new department called CONTINUING EDUCATION. This informative page will include advertisers choosing to share their upcoming educational programs, CLE seminars and conferences. It will also include information on Houston Bar Association-sponsored CLE programs. As an additional feature, CONTINUING EDUCATION advertisers can choose to add a banner ad at our website, www.thehoustonlawyer.com, with a link to their homepage. Take a look and see what's being offered to enhance your expertise.
